Dr. Eileen Poeter – Retirement from the Groundwater Project
Dr. Eileen Poeter has been an integral member of the Groundwater Project’s Board of Directors since its inception, bringing unparalleled dedication, scientific leadership, and an unwavering commitment to advancing global groundwater literacy. Her contributions have shaped every facet of the organization’s growth and impact.
Over the course of her tenure, Dr. Poeter has been responsible for the final scientific review and publication of every Groundwater Project book to date—an extraordinary 73 publications by June 30, 2026. With her exceptional attention to detail, deep technical expertise, and ability to view each topic through the eyes of a learner, she elevated the quality, clarity, and accessibility of every book that passed through her hands. Her role as scientific editor and producer has been foundational to the Project’s reputation for excellence.
Dr. Poeter also initiated and championed the Groundwater Project’s self‑learning module program, even coding several modules herself. Her vision for interactive, learner‑driven education has become a defining feature of the Project’s pedagogical approach. In addition to her editorial and technical leadership, she played a central role in Board governance, supporting the Board of Directors and working closely with the Director of Operations to ensure strong coordination, strategic alignment, and organizational continuity.
As an author, Dr. Poeter’s contributions have been equally influential. She served as the lead author of the Project’s first publication, Groundwater in Our Water Cycle, which explores the relationship between global groundwater systems and the hydrologic cycle. She also authored several cornerstone texts, including Hydrogeologic Properties of Earth Materials and Principles of Groundwater Flow, Graphical Construction of Groundwater Flow Nets, and An Introduction to Hydraulic Testing in Hydrogeology: Basic Pumping, Slug, and Packer Methods. These works provide essential insights into groundwater function, principles, and management, and will continue to educate and inspire learners for generations.
Dr. Poeter’s keen intellect, scientific rigor, and steadfast dedication have helped shape the Groundwater Project into what it is today—a global leader in groundwater education. Her influence is woven into every system, every publication, and every milestone the Project has achieved.
As she transitions into retirement, we extend our deepest appreciation for her extraordinary service, leadership, and vision. Her legacy will continue to guide the Project’s mission and inspire the global groundwater community.
